Who we are

Multi-Denominational + Multi Generational + Increasingly Multi-Ethnic

Multi-Denominational: Saint Matthew is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). We are members of the Willow Creek Association and the Mosaix Multi-Ethnic Church Network. Members of our Staff CORE Team come from the ELCA, The Presbyterian Church USA, and The United Methodist Church. Above all we are a Christ-centered church; “it’s all about Jesus” (“You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and yet it is them that testify on my behalf”    John 5:39).

Multi-Generational: Our worship and style of ministry reflects the best of the new and old (“Every scribe that has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old” Matthew 13:52). Our worship always includes the Sacrament of Holy Communion (we practice “Open Communion” – all are welcome to the Lord’s Table who share with us the faith that Jesus is Present in the bread and wine/grape juice), and we enjoy “psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.” We do many things together as a church family and also have events which are age/life-stage specific.

Increasingly Multi-Ethnic: We believe that it's a scandal to the Good News of Jesus Christ that Sunday morning is the most segregated hour in America, and we are trying to create a community of faith that represents the diversity of our neighborhood; not to be politically-correct, but to reflect the Kingdom of Heaven.  We have gone from >5% to 9% diversity in the past three years.
